Several central areas of focus: fabrication and characterization of nanostructures of polymers, composites, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and drugs; fabrication and characterization of supramolecular associations containing cyclodextrines and drugs; design and fabrication of functionalized surfaces of metal nanoparticles and solid supports; design and fabrication of nano composite materials; receptor-ligand interactions relevant to the diagnostics of different diseases; soft materials.

These areas deal with: fundamental behavior of biomolecules in bulk solutions, on surfaces and interfaces; fundamental behavior of soft materials on surfaces and interfaces; design and fabrication of well ordered films using "smart" polymers as proteins; design and fabrication of bio-nanostructures; thermodynamic and structural characterization of the resulting structures and materials; strategic initiative to expand the research in soft materials science.

Applications of resulting structures for: development of biomolecular sensors and devices; hybrid biological/non-biological devices; bioinspired materials; multifunctional supramolecular systems; nanofabrication of ordered self-assemblies by manipulation of intermolecular interactions using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and molecular recognition phenomena.
